LAS VEGAS — Deobra Redden, 31, is set to go on trial this week for charges related to the violent attack on Judge Mary Kay Holthus in January. Redden faces nine charges, including felony attempted murder of a victim 60 years of age or older.
Redden has a lengthy criminal record, including three felony convictions. He has hired criminal defense attorney Carl Arnold—also known for representing Duane ‘Keefe D’ Davis in the Tupac murder case—was captured on video jumping over the bench and attacking Judge Holthus during a court hearing. The video of the incident went viral online.
During the hearing, Redden was being sentenced for attempted battery charges. As Judge Holthus prepared to deliver the sentence, Redden attacked her.
According to an arrest report, Holthus stated that Redden knocked her out of her chair, slammed her head against the wall, and pulled some of her hair out. The report also noted that two marshals, alerted by a panic alarm, were sent to the wrong courtroom.
Since the incident, Redden’s defense team and family have raised mental health issues, claiming he is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
According to the Eighth Judicial Court Portal, Redden’s trial is scheduled to begin on September 3. The state plans to call 10 to 15 witnesses, while the defense has two. The trial is expected to last approximately a week and a half.
