An Ohio woman, Akira Fletcher, 23, has been arrested for fatally shooting Nyema Norton, 29, after Norton was filmed smashing Fletcher’s car windows and throwing rocks at her during an altercation in a Cincinnati parking lot.
Fletcher claims she acted in self-defense and posted a video of the incident on her Facebook account. In the footage from late July, Norton and another woman can be seen arguing with Fletcher, who remains inside her vehicle.
“You’re going to jail,” Fletcher says in the video, before Norton throws an object at her car. Fletcher continues narrating, saying, “She just threw another rock at me, as you can see,” while adding, “She’s slashing my tires, her and her cousin.”
Fletcher also mentions that she has a gun in her purse. As the argument continues, the sound of breaking glass is heard, and the camera reveals the car’s shattered window. The women start to walk away before Fletcher exits the car and continues the argument, saying, “You should be happy you don’t get clapped,” several times.
In a second clip, Fletcher is seen warning the women, saying, “You’re going to jail,” and “Hit me again,” as they approach her car with the broken driver’s side window. Fletcher then fires several shots from her vehicle, which ends the video.
Norton died from her injuries six weeks after the confrontation, while the other woman survived, as reported by Local 12.
Fletcher defended her actions in a Facebook post, stating, “I was being punched in my face, rocks thrown at me, and Nyema trying to get in my car. She busted my driver-side window out to attack me, she continued to try and get in my car to stab me, and I let her hit me while I was on the phone with 911 asking for help.”
She added, “I told them to stop over and over and over again. I never got out my car to fight or anything and I allowed her to punch me more than once.”
The two women reportedly had a history of conflict, with Norton previously accused of threatening Fletcher with a gun in May.
Fletcher has been charged with aggravated murder, murder, and felonious assault.
