Nashville police arrested two suspects linked to a mass shooting near Tennessee State University (TSU) that left one dead and nine others injured. Marquez Davis and DeAnthony Brown, both 24, were taken into custody on Monday night and are now charged with criminal homicide.
The shooting occurred Saturday evening off-campus during TSU’s homecoming festivities. According to the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), Davis was found carrying a firearm at the time of his arrest. He has a prior conviction for robbery, felony gun possession, and felony drug possession from April 2024, which resulted in a 10-year probated sentence to the Community Corrections Program.
Before the arrests, MNPD reported that the shooting involved five individuals affiliated with local gangs who “indiscriminately started shooting at each other.” One of those involved, 24-year-old Vonquae Johnson, died from his injuries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, while two others from the group were treated for their injuries.
Innocent bystanders, including children, were also affected but are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.
MNPD Chief John Drake emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “The shooters had no regard for human life and put a crowd of innocent persons, including children, in extreme danger. The entire criminal justice system must treat violent gun crime with the seriousness it demands with resulting incarceration for those convicted.”
TSU confirmed that the shooting did not involve any students from the university and occurred off-campus.
