INGLEWOOD, Calif. — A customer at a CarMax in Inglewood, California, drove his car through the dealership’s showroom on Saturday, injuring several employees and customers. The incident happened around 2:10 p.m. at the CarMax on South La Cienega Boulevard.
According to CarMax, the customer was getting his vehicle appraised when he became upset with the offer. Witnesses said he “snapped,” got into his parked car, and drove through the front door after a few attempts.
Video footage showed the driver reversing into the showroom entrance as panicked employees and customers ran for safety. The driver then sped through the building, leaving broken glass, overturned desks, and chaos behind.
“Employees were just running, screaming ‘get out the way, get out the way!'” said a witness who was at CarMax to buy a car.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department reported that eight people were injured. Two were transported to the hospital with critical injuries, while six others were treated on-site for minor injuries.
CarMax released a statement confirming the incident, stating: “This afternoon, a customer drove through our Inglewood, California store, hitting and injuring several employees and customers who are receiving care at the hospital at this time. This individual was a customer and he was arrested by the police.”
The driver was arrested at the scene. Initially, the call to authorities was for an active shooter, but it was later confirmed there was no gunfire. Further details have not yet been released.
