MADISON, Wis. – A Madison resident who turned himself in to police on Friday admitted to shooting and killing a woman in his apartment, claiming it was because she laughed at him and refused to apologize for discussing him with her boyfriend, which enraged him.
Terrence L. Davis, 42, has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide and possession of a firearm by a felon. The victim, identified in court documents as 25-year-old Mikayla L. Rogers, was discovered by police in the living room of Davis’ apartment located at 1605 Schmedeman Ave. on Madison’s North Side.
According to a criminal complaint filed on Tuesday, Davis voluntarily went to the Madison Police Department’s Central District office at around 8:45 a.m. on Friday and indicated he wanted to speak to officers about a homicide.
Davis appeared in Dane County Circuit Court on Tuesday, where Court Commissioner Jason Hanson set his bail at $1 million. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 28.
Details from the complaint state that after Davis confessed to police, officers went to his residence and found Rogers slumped on the living room sofa, deceased. A black rifle was located in a bedroom closet among other items.
Davis explained that he relocated to Madison from Illinois in 2020 and had started working at Amazon on the city’s East Side, where he initially met Rogers. Although he left his job at Amazon in May 2023, he maintained contact with Rogers.
Davis recounted that after moving to Madison, he began dating another woman but reconnected with Rogers more frequently following the end of his previous relationship. He had previously distanced himself from Rogers due to hostility from her boyfriend but resumed a romantic relationship with her about two months ago.
Rogers was on a FaceTime call with her boyfriend, who then requested to speak with Davis. Davis kept the phone’s camera turned away from his face and attempted to deny knowing the boyfriend. However, the boyfriend claimed to recognize Davis, stating they used to work together.
“I know who you are,” Davis told police the man said. “She’s told me.”
The man went on to tell Davis he knew everything about Davis and where he lived.
“I looked at (Rogers) like, what?” Davis told police. “I think the girl had love for me but didn’t know how to act.”
He said Rogers laughed at him after the Facetime call and that “hit him deep.”
“I don’t even know what I was thinking,” Davis said. “I was pleading with her, are you serious, and she was like, man, I don’t play with this (expletive), I’ve been through this (expletive) multiple times.”
Davis said he became upset at her response, walked into his bedroom and grabbed what he described as an “AK-style” gun. He said Rogers started crying and said, “Look, whatever you are going to do, just do it. I don’t care, I don’t give a (expletive).”
He then shot Rogers once, he told police. He started crying and buried his face in his hands and said, “I know I (expletive) up.”
He is currently held on $1 Million bail
